Understanding Traditional Hearth Pad Protection
Before adding accessories or choosing framing, it’s helpful to understand how a Traditional Hearth Pad already protects your home, so you can make an informed decision about what additional protection and design elements you’d like to add.
Here is a breakdown of Traditional Hearth Pad specifications:
- Our Hearth Pads are classified as Type 2, offering both ember and thermal protection for your home (this includes both tile and natural stone collections).
- It's made from fully non-combustible material, preventing heat transfer to your subfloor.
- It has R-values of 2.3 or 1.592. This is well above the minimum type 2 requirements (the minimum requirement of R-value is 1.0).
- All our Hearth Pads are tested to meet or exceed UL 1618.
- Both substrates provide excellent tile bonding characteristics, unlike substrates found in other brands of Hearth Pads
- Our construction process doesn’t rely on air pockets for thermal value, providing structural integrity for dependable thermal resistance.
- Extruded, tubed aluminum for maximum strength
- Corner plugs on the frame to ensure perfectly “square” Hearth Pads every time
- Frames are powder-coated prior to tile/slate installation to prevent overspray issues
- Grout and thinset clean off frames easily
Protection Built Into Every Frame
When exploring specific frame styles, it’s important to know that every American Panel frame includes these standard construction features, regardless of Hearth Pad size, shape, or frame selection:
Choose your frame
1” Frame
- Available in Original Edge Frame style only
- Maximum size up to 54 × 48
- 30% lighter than other Hearth Pads
- Uses a single ½” non-combustible substrate, providing an R-value of 2.3
1-¼” Frame
- Available in both the Original Edge and Colonial Edge Frame styles
- Available in all Hearth Pad sizes, large and small
- Most use two substrates for strength in large boards and to achieve a ¾” substrate for the frame, providing an R-value of 1.592
- Natural Stone Hearth Pads that are 54x48 and smaller use a single 5/8" substrate, providing an have an R-value of 2.90

Extend Your Stove’s Design With Wall Pads
Is your stove placed near a wall or tucked into a corner? Our fully non-combustible wall pads are designed to pair with your custom Hearth Pad to extend its design and protection.
Talk with your stove dealer and check your stove manual for clearance requirements for your specific stove.
Wall Pad Features and Specifications:
- Available in matching designs for both our tile and natural stone collections
- Compatible with flat wall (single-wall board) and corner (two-wall board) installations
- Can pair with Original and Colonial Edge frames
- Can be customized to fit any floor pad size, including custom ones
- Our mounting system and fully non-combustible design can reduce clearances to a combustible wall by up to 66% in many cases
- Mounting brackets are available to space wall pad(s) 1" off the Hearth Pad and 1" away from the wall
- Fully customizable to fit unique home features, including windows and corner walls
Customize Your Hearth Pad With A Pedestal
At American Panel, we offer matching pedestals for all sizes and shapes, including custom orders. Adding a pedestal can provide extra protection to safeguard your home’s flooring and complement your hearth setup.
General Pedestal Features and Specifications:
- Available in tile or slate.
- The Traditional Pedestal and Thermashield are both designed to be slightly smaller than the Hearth Pad. The Hearth Pad, which is a separate unit, will overhang both pedestals on all sides.
- Both the 6" and 1" pedestal options are built to increase overall R-value.
Traditional Pedestal – 6" Height
The Traditional Pedestal is available in two options: with thermal value and without thermal value. When combined with a Hearth Pad, the total R-value increases to a minimum of 3.67 to 4.71, respectively. Using the thermal value pedestal can increase the total R-value depending on the thickness of the mineral fiberboard selected. A solid 3/4″ surface is installed under the mineral fiberboard and is not included in the R-value rating.

- R-value 2.08 with 1" mineral fiberboard
- R-value 3.12 with 1½" mineral fiberboard
Pedestal without Thermal Value
- Includes a 3/4" solid top surface (not just framing)
- No added R-value
Low Profile Pedestal
- 1" frame – black powder coat (same as Hearth Pad frame)
- 1" of Micore 300, providing an R-value of 2.08 in addition to the R-value of the Hearth Pad
